Hell on Heels Couture

Recently I worked with the amazingly talented and award winning fashion designer Suzy Homewrecker. Her line Hell on Heels Couture is an amazing blend of colors and patterns that I feel raises the bar in the world of alternative fashion. Below you can see pictures from the shoot as well as an exclusive interview with Suzy.

Q: How long have you been designing clothes?

A: I started making clothes in 1998, self taught using the trial and error method. I have been designing for the alternative fashion scene ever since. There were so many designs I had in my head of what I wanted to wear, only I would never be able to find it; stuff I would see in movies or music videos when I was younger “but only if it were black” or “if only this was a slightly different cut” the other problem was never being able to find clothes that fit right…that is what originally pushed me to start designing clothes. I design the outfits and accessories, I cut everything out freehand and never used a pattern. I also sew everything myself.

Q: What inspires you as a fashion designer?

A: Music and art inspires me as a designer. Fashion is wearable art.

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers?

A: Research research research.. look up labels and what their process is. Find out where to get fabric wholesale and see what works for you. It really depends on what your goals are. If you want to sell at Magic to boutiques, design and have your outfits mass produced or design a custom line all original and handmade. My goals have changed over the years, don’t just stick to one idea either. Do what is obtainable and realistic. Also, collaborations have always introduced me to new people.

Q: Where can people purchase your clothing?

A: Currently I am selling only collectible custom handmade outfits and sell to exclusive boutiques like Missconstrued Boutique in Phoenix.

The Arizona Renaissance Festival

This Saturday 12 North Photography had the awesome privilege of photographing the amazing Arizona Renaissance Festival and what an experience it was! Everything from the food to the talented staff of performers was extraordinary. I defiantly learned why people travel from all over the state to be apart of it.

There were so many amazing performances on the many stages at the festival all with something fun and interesting to offer. But I would have to say the one that stood out to me the most was a dark dressed masked man by the name of Frank Della Penna and his carillon. The music he played truly rang out across the fair ground bringing in a large audience of curious and excited listeners. Frank Della Penna also let 12 North Photography use his song “Red Earth” as the music for our video of the Festival. You can learn more about Frank Della Penna by following the link at the end of this post.

At the center of the Arizona Renaissances Festival is of course the joust. This is where the four knights of the realm come together in what was supposed to be a simple test of their skills. Instead it turns into an all out fight which leads  a four-way joust to the death competition where there can only be one victor. What a war it was and an exciting one at that equipped with horse battles, sword fights, fire, blood and 100′s of screaming spectators to add to the realism of the action.

In the end I would have to say my experience at the Arizona Renaissances Festival was a great one. It was as if I had walked into a movie because it truly had it all; romance, drama, action, adventure, comedy, etc. I will say that most of the time when you hear the phrase “fun for the whole family” if your like me you think fun for kids and maybe some mild entertainment for people over the age of 17. But this is not the case when it comes to the Arizona Renaissances Festival. It truly has something for the whole family to enjoy that is why I strongly suggest you go attend before it’s over!

The Arizona Renaissances Festival runs every weekend until April 1st! So don’t miss out on all the fun and excitement of  one of the best Ren Fairs around!

Mortal Kombat Cosplay

A few weekends back I had the great opportunity to work with 3 amazingly talented Arizona Cosplayers; Jessica Nigri, Rosanna Rocha and Paris Sinclair. The result was an awesome set of Grindhouse style Mortal Kombat photos. I chose to go with a Grindhouse theme because I feel that Mortal Kombat definitely falls under exploitation category. Like Mortal Kombat, Grindhouse films (or exploitation films) have always been infamously violent and share many similarities to the game. For example Cannibalism was a common theme in Grindhouse films and with characters like Mileena (modeled by Rosanna Rocha) it reigns true in the Mortal Kombat series as well making Mortal Kombat in my opinion one of if not the best fighting game ever made. Thank you for stopping by my blog and I hope you enjoy the photos!

Countdown to the Lockdown

By now you might probably know that I am a huge horror buff and have a great fascination of the paranormal. On Saturday May 12th the Orange County Paranormal Society will be hosting “The Yuma Territorial Prison Lockdown” which is a fundraising event intended to raise money for the Yuma Territorial Prison Museum. The 7 hour long event will consist of a full paranormal investigation of some of the most reportedly haunted locations in Arizona, Special guests and much more. 12 North Photography has been asked to photograph the event and of course I jumped at the opportunity! To celebrate this awesome fundraiser I present to you “Countdown to the Lock Down” which will be a monthly series of fright filled photographs and stories! Each photo series will include some more information about the lockdown and it will all be concluded with photos and stories from the lockdown on May 12th! So if you can make it to Yuma or live in the area be sure not to miss this event!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the photos in this post and don’t miss next month’s “Countdown to the Lockdown”. Also, if you have any suggestions for a scary story or personal experience with the paranormal that you think would make for a great photo series leave it in the comment section below! If your story is selected I will make sure to give you credit in the post!
