Have you ever watched a television show or movie and said to yourself, I love that outfit and wish I had one like it? Well Cosplayers all over the world take that idea to the next level and actually create the amazing attire of their favorite characters in everything from; comic books, video games, movies, anime , etc. I first heard about Cosplay at the 2011 Phoenix Comicon and have ever since been interested in not only photographing Cosplay Models but in learning more about it. Did you know that Cosplay has been around for over 50 years and made it’s first appearance in the United States at Worldcon which was the first World Science Fiction Convention held in 1939? Today Cosplay isn’t confined to the halls of convention centers in fact all over the world people are using Cosplay as a way to be charitable. Groups like the Arizona Avengers put their resources to use by fundraising, charity work and volunteering.
Saturday I had the opportunity to work with my first Arizona Cosplayer Electric Lady. She molded her latest costume which is inspired by Madam Red from the anime series Black Butler. She has been cosplaying now for seven years and does it because she says, it gives her a way to be creative and step into the shoes of someone else. She made the jacket and dress seen in the photos and altered the hat and gloves to fit the character. It is a very impressive costume and I look forward to working with her again in the future. In the meantime I hope you all enjoy the photographs of Madam Red!

Absolutely fantastic outfit, it looks very well made and great photography, hair and makeup too. I’ve seen plenty of films and tv shows where I’ve loved the fashion, I’ve even started a couple of posts with the same line as this one lol. I’ve seen a fair amount of anime but my faves aren’t really known for their fashion as they don’t tend to change outfits enough to merit having a fashion theme other than battle gear/uniform. However, one that I do remember was Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHolic characters) where both the guys and girl characters had consistently great outfits.
It must be fun photographing cosplayers, they’re very passionate about what they do.
Thank you so much! It is so much fun and I hope to do a lot more of it in the future! I too have seen so many awesome clothes in movies mainly jackets that I would love to own. Thank you so much again!
I have been someone interested in shooting cosplay myself. I need to star looking for models in the same field as well. I really like the electric lady’s outfit. Very vibrant red with the vignette. Beautiful woman. I hope you do some more of these type of shoots.
Also, when are you going to do another story photoshoot? I really enjoy those.
Thank you Jason! and I am planning a new story shoot as we speak! I will keep you posted!
Good to hear, I will be shooting my first on the 17th of February.
Nice, I especially like the one against the brick wall. Very cool outfit as well, wouldn’t mind shooting something like that…might have to go and find myself some cosplayers…
Thnk you so much!
