Cupcake! A Fetish Themed Dance Party

This past Friday 12 North Photography was at the Rogue in Scottsdalefor Cupcake! Which is a monthly fetish themed party hosted by fashion designer Suzy Homewrecker. There was a live performance from Miss Krystle and Bent Self followed by some epic beats courtesy of DJs Dark Mark, Self Destrukt, Blonde Noize and Defense Mekanizm as well as Troop 666 Go-Go’s  decked out in Hell on Heels Couture.

Who ever said the Devil wears Prada has obviously never been to this party. Here anything goes for clothes including but not limited to fishnets, pasties, leather, chains, wigs, you name it! Suzy Homewrecker’s ”Hell on Heels Couture” as seen in the photo above is a wild mix of Glam and Fetish giving us a much-needed break from the typical and cheesy Go-Go dancer outfits we have come to expect over the years. More than anything her clothing is both unique and stylish, so if your into alternative style I strongly suggest you check out her website!

It wasn’t just the fashion that made this an amazing party. Musically it was a powerhouse starting with an amazing performance from Miss Krystle and Bent self; who performed songs off of their latest albums.  Miss Krystle’s beautiful singing voice and magnificent stage presence mixed with the vocally hard-hitting Bent Self made for an amazing show. DJs Dark Mark, DJ Self Destrukt, Blonde Noize and Defense Mekanizm closed the night with a truly brilliant assortment of music that kept the party hopping the whole night. Now when you match two amazingly talented DJ’s with beautiful Go-Go’s and an awesome unique crowd, then you’ve really got yourself a party to remember.

If you missed the Cupcake Fetish Party don’t kick yourself yet. It is a monthly event so you still have a chance to throw on your favorite fishnets and get out there. For more information about dates be sure to join Cupcake on facebook by following the link at the end of the post.

The Lost Photo Shoot

A little over a year ago I did a photo shoot for a dear friend of mine, her name is Amanda Tucker and she is an alternative fashion designer and owner of Modifiedminds, she is also part owner of Evermore Nevermore (which is an awesome alternative clothing and collectible store in downtown mesa). After the photos were taken I uploaded them to my computer and the unthinkable happened; my computer crashed beyond fixing. So I had to attempt to re-edit the photos on a friend’s computer which didn’t have the software I needed, so I had to deliver the raw unedited photos to her… It wasn’t that they were bad, they just weren’t what I envisioned when planning the shoot. Now here I am a year later looking through one of my old back up drives and what did I find? The original files to that very shoot, files I thought were long gone. So I re-edited the pictures the way I envisioned them when I first took them a year ago. These pictures are for Amanda Tucker and the awesome people down at Evermore Nevermore!  I hope you all enjoy them!

Shoot for Flipped Bird

Recently I was fortunate to do photos for Marci McDonald Designer/owner of Flipped Bird. Here is a quote from the flipped bird website “Our super cute eco-friendly reversible bags, floppy hats, head bands and yoga/beach bags are happy, fun and funky.” Her bags are amazing and the coolest part is that they are all reversible! Have a look at some of the shots I got!

Haute for Teacher pt.3

Q. How long have you been making clothes?

A. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in 1995 and started working for X-Large Manufacturing and X-Girl in L.A.  I started my own line of clothing called Monkeywench in 1996 and closed it down in 2000.  I started my current line Angela Johnson in 2001.

Q. What is your favorite type of clothing to make and why?

A. I love to make my staple T-shirt Ballgowns, T-shirt Party Dress and T-shirt Mini Dress.  I’ve been making them since 2001 and have made so many of them that I’m really fast and efficient at making them.  But at the same time, each one is made with different T-shirts every time I make one, so it’s new and interesting and creative every time.

Q. Where can one purchase your clothing?

A. Most of my sales are on my website www.angelajohnsondesigns.com, but I also sell in a few boutiques nationwide and on other “indie” designer websites.  You can find a list of where I sell on my website.  I also have a studio in my home where my customers can come and get fitted and try on clothing and I have some items at a studio space called Local Talent in downtown Scottsdale.

Haute for Teacher pt.2

Hello out there and welcome to the second installment of Haute for Teacher the latest clothing line by Angela Johnson! Below are a few questions I asked Angela about her line! You can see more of her line and read the rest of her interview next Monday when Haute for Teacher continues!

Q. What is the name of this line and what was your inspiration for it?

A. My Spring 2011 line is called “Haute for Teacher”.  Every year I think of a theme/mood that inspires the direction of my line.  I’m inspired by music, pop culture, movies, time periods and more.  Almost anything can become an inspiration, but the key to this is that my inspiration is fun because I don’t take myself or fashion seriously.  I think fashion can be pretentious and unattainable and I like my line to be fun and a bit tongue-in-cheek.  This year, I chose “Haute for Teacher” because I was in my car listening to the radio and heard Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” and it got me all pumped up.  I am a child of the 80’s so a lot of 80’s music inspires and excites me.  This song really made me excited and I thought how perfect it would be to use it in a fashion show because I hate typical fashion show music.  So, I created my entire line from this one thought.

Q. What inspired you to use T-Shirts?

A. I used to own a clothing line that was more mass produced in Los Angeles in the mid 1990’s called Monkeywench.  But, I moved back to Arizona in 2000 and found that I could no longer operate Monkeywench and had to close it down due to lack of fashion industry resources in Arizona.  There are no wholesale fabric vendors, mass production sewing contractors or anything else necessary to operate a real clothing line.  So, I decided to make clothing in a different way.  I decided to create one-of-a-kind items that I could sew myself out of materials that would be readily available to me in Arizona.  I knew that there were a lot of thrift stores around and they always have plenty of T-shirts.  I loved the juxtaposition of the casual T-shirt fabric being used to create something like a formal, constructed ball gown and so that’s where the line began.  I stared with just my staple T-shirt Ballgown about 9 years ago and I still have that piece (in 3 different lengths) in my line to this day.  It is offered every season and then I just add new pieces that work with a new theme to keep the line updated and fresh once a year.

Q. What is your process when making your clothes?

A. I make a pattern using a sloper (or block pattern used to make all other patterns from for fit consistency) or I drape something on a dress form and then turn it into a pattern.  Then I test it out of regular fabric to try the fit and make sure it works.  Then once the pattern is complete, I scour the thrift stores for a bunch of T-shirts in the same color/logo scheme.  I take the shirts home, wash them and then cut the arms, necks and hems off to create patches of fabric.  Then I patchwork them together to create fabric.  Then I lay the patterns on the patchwork T-shirts, cut them out and sew them together.
